Because fur babies need saving too.

Let’s be real: your dog will eat anything, your cat thinks they’re immortal, and your ferret—well, you’re still not sure why you have a ferret. But when pet emergencies strike, you don’t have time to Google "Can cats perform the Heimlich on themselves?"

            That’s where

           Pet CPR

comes in. It might sound like something from an episode of Paw Patrol: ER, but it’s legit—and learning it could mean the difference between heartbreak and a happy tail wag.

The Basics: Dog and Cat CPR 101

If your pet collapses, is unresponsive, and not breathing, here’s what you do (after you stop panicking and hide the peanut butter):

           1. Check for breathing and a pulse.

Use two fingers (not your thumbs!) on the inside of the back leg or near the chest.

           2. Start compressions.

            Small dogs and cats:

Use one hand to gently compress the chest 100–120 times per minute. (Yes, to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” works for pets too. Bee Gees for the win.)

            Medium to large dogs:

Use two hands over the widest part of the chest.

           3. Add rescue breaths.

Muzzle closed, mouth over the nose. Give

           1 breath every 30 compressions

. No judgment if this feels weird—your dog’s probably thinking, “This is not how I imagined bonding time.”

You're humming “Eye of the Tiger” as background music? Optional, but recommended.

Panic-mashing their chest like a Looney Tune.

             Nope. Controlled compressions, people.

            Blowing too hard.

The Playlist That Could Save a Life (or at Least Make It More Rhythmic)

So, you’ve taken a CPR class. You know it’s 100–120 compressions per minute. But in the middle of a real emergency, math flies out the window. What sticks? Music.

Welcome to your new CPR playlist. Not only do these tunes have the right tempo for chest compressions, but they’ll also make you laugh, cry, or at least raise an eyebrow while you're saving a life. Because nothing says “hero” like belting out Bee Gees lyrics mid-compression.

           Wait… Why Music?

The American Heart Association recommends giving chest compressions at 100 to 120 beats per minute. That’s exactly the tempo of some of your favorite songs—whether you admit to loving them or not.

            “Stayin’ Alive” – Bee Gees

The gold standard. Disco lives, and so do you.

The Plastic Wrap Trick (Yes, Like a Burrito)

Got a burn? First, don’t panic. Second, don’t slather on butter like your grandma used to. Cool it with water (not ice), then wrap it up... in plastic wrap. Yep—

            Why? Plastic wrap is

, sterile, and lets emergency folks see the damage without peeling off skin like gift wrap. You’re not a human Hot Pocket—treat burns right, and avoid extra pain (and drama).

CPR for infants and children is different than for adults—and knowing those differences can mean the difference between life and death. In children under 1, the most common cause of cardiac arrest is

Ah, the Fourth of July. A day where we celebrate America’s freedom by lighting things on fire, letting Uncle Rick near the grill, and launching small explosives into the air while holding a beverage in one hand and questionable decisions in the other.

At Life Squad RVA, we love freedom. We also love

, which is why we’re giving you this very official, extremely serious** (not really) holiday guide.**

Here’s a tip: if you need to say “hold my beer,” don’t light it.

A first aid kit is nearby (bonus points if you actually know what’s in it)

You don’t aim bottle rockets at Cousin Chad “as a joke”

Someone sober(ish) is watching with a phone in hand, ready to call 911 if you become the human finale

Step 2: Choking on a Hot Dog Is Not a Patriotic Way to Go

We get it. You’re trying to break your personal bratwurst record, but if someone turns purple mid-bite,

           don’t yell “'MERICA!”—do the Heimlich.

Choking is one of the top causes of accidental death. It’s also 100% preventable if you know how to respond.
In our class, we teach how to:

Spot true choking (hint: they’re not coughing = bad)

            Deliver proper abdominal thrusts

Avoid accidentally tackling your in-laws while doing it

Step 3: Burn First, Then Learn

Sparklers burn at 2,000°F. That’s literally enough to melt metal. So if little Tommy wants to duel with two of them—maybe intervene before he becomes a cautionary tale.

           Burn safety tip:

Cool water, not ice. Cover, don’t pop. And never say “I saw this on TikTok” as a first aid strategy.

Step 4: CPR Is for Patriots

If someone goes down—heart attack, heatstroke, or fireworks fail—it’s up to you to keep the stars and stripes flying.

 Just remember:

Call 911. Push hard and fast to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive.”

(Bonus points if you sing while doing it.)

            Celebrate independence by becoming

When someone’s heart stops beating, survival depends on what happens in the first few minutes. That’s where the “Chain of Survival” comes in—a series of critical actions starting with

           early recognition and CPR

            , followed by

           early defibrillation (AED use)

            , then rapid

           emergency medical services

            , and finally

           post-cardiac care

           .

            But here’s the kicker:

most of the links in that chain rely on you

—the bystander. The person who recognizes something is wrong. The person who calls 911. The person who starts compressions. Even the best EMTs can’t save a life if they arrive too late.

Don’t be the broken link. Our classes at Life Squad RVA walk you through each piece of the chain so that, when every second counts,

you know exactly what to do

           .

You don’t have to be a doctor to save a life—you just need the right beat. CPR chest compressions should be 100 to 120 beats per minute, and one of the easiest ways to keep that tempo?

Sing “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees

           . Seriously—it’s a medically endorsed rhythm!

Other songs that work: “Dancing Queen,” “Another One Bites the Dust” (morbid, yes, but accurate), or “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” The point is to

           stay on beat

            and

           keep compressing

until help arrives or an AED is in place. We even play these songs during class—it keeps training fun and memorable.

So next time you're grooving to disco, remember: that beat could save someone’s life.

Why Hands‑Only CPR Saves Lives (Seriously)

Hands-only CPR saves lives. No tools needed—just your hands, confidence, and quick action. Learn how at Life Squad RVA.

            Did you know that

hands-only CPR can double or even triple a cardiac arrest victim's chances of survival

According to the American Heart Association, immediate chest compressions—without mouth-to-mouth—are just as effective in the first few minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest (

). That means you don’t have to hesitate because of the “ick” factor or fear of doing it wrong. Just push hard and fast in the center of the chest at about 100–120 beats per minute.

The key is not to freeze. Even imperfect CPR is better than no CPR. Waiting for emergency responders costs critical minutes. Most out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home, so

It’s real advice, backed by medical research, delivered with humor, heart, and the occasional “dad joke.”

Why? Because life-saving doesn’t have to be boring.

You’re way more likely to remember how to use an AED if someone explained it with a joke and a demo than if you had to read a manual (yawn). At Life Squad RVA, we believe learning how to save lives should be:

✔ Easy to remember
✔ Fun (yes, really)
